Learn How to Eat for Type 2 Diabetes: Small Changes, Big Results!

Updated: Oct 28, 2020

I once asked people who were recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes how they were feeling, and responses ranged from “disappointed in myself” to “broken.” If you have recently been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, you may be asking yourself how you got where you are now, you are not alone. You may feel afraid, sad, defeated, depressed, angry or maybe you’re just anxious to learn what to do next. These feelings are absolutely normal and very common as you process news of your type 2 diabetes diagnosis.

You likely may be wondering how diabetes will change how and what you eat going forward. You may be thinking that you need to eat entirely differently, or that you’ll have to buy expensive foods, or that you will never be able to eat the foods you love again. But this is not true. You will need to make some changes, but you do not need to take an “all or nothing” approach. Making just small changes can mean big results!

Where do you turn for credible information about how to eat when you have type 2 diabetes? Even though you may have questions swirling in your mind about carbohydrates, sugars and more, you don’t have to navigate your diabetes diagnosis and next steps alone. Professional and peer support make managing your diabetes easier.

Here are 5 things you can do right now

  1. Talk to your doctor about your diabetes control...What are your numbers? What should they be?

  2. Start moving more..

  3. Cut back on sugary drinks

  4. Find support... for example... a certified diabetes educator, dietitian trained in diabetes, or diabetes support group.. Don't go it alone.

  5. Read up on diabetes from credible sources like the American Diabetes Association. Request "Where Do I Begin? Living with Type 2 Diabetes"

How to Eat for Type 2 Diabetes: Program Details

How to Eat for Type 2 Diabetes is a 12-week, self-paced, online program that includes:

  • Pre-recorded classes

  • Worksheets and resources to help you learn and understand core concepts

  • Individual sessions with your own personal coach (I am a certified diabetes care and education specialist, registered dietitian and nurse)

  • Group forum for additional support

  • Regularly-scheduled open office hours with me so that you can ask questions and get advice

"How to Eat for Type 2 Diabetes" starts with simple concepts and gradually moves to more complex topics. You will have close contact with me - your personal coach - and I will listen, guide and help stay on track. If you are feeling challenged or stuck, I am here for you! The concepts are as follows:

Step 1 Get to know your diabetes

Step 2 Be carbohydrate conscious

Step 3 Strategies to manage your blood sugar

Step 4 Learn how to assess your progress

Step 5 Adjust to see more and better results

The course is organized so that you move step by step through one module each week, and make changes that will help make the  greatest change to your blood glucose first. This will be manageable, I promise you! Once you understand the basic concepts, you will learn additional strategies that will help you continue on your journey. This course is not a diet, and it does not focus on weight loss, although you will receive suggestions for what to eat, including sample meal ideas and ways to think through the best options for you.

I expect for you to have challenges and that is the reason this is a 12 week course – you will be given plenty of time to practice, work through concepts and incorporate new, sustainable behaviors. You’ll get support, accountability and regular check-ins to keep you on track.
